The first image that a person views of their baby through an ultrasound image is an exciting and life-changing experience. Sonogram is another term used for ultrasound images, of which there are three different types available: 2D, 3D and 4D. These pictures are the first glimpse a family has of their new member, and is elemental in forming the initial parental bond with the child. Due to the excitement, most people overlook the fact that this image is a part of a diagnostic procedure that conveys information relating to the prenatal health of both the mother and child.

When 2D ultrasounds were first developed, they were revolutionary. Ultrasounds created the ability for medical professionals to diagnose some medical conditions of the fetus before birth. In some instances, these professionals were also able to address these issues while the baby was still inside of the mother. This type of technology allowed the parents a forewarning of their baby’s condition while also putting their minds at ease in regards to possible birth defects. Although 3D and 4D varieties are preferred today by expectant families, the 2D ultrasound remains the most reliable choice when speaking in terms of verifying the child’s gender. Additionally, this type is also better for confirming proper development of the baby’s internal organs.
3D and 4D Ultrasounds
Following 2D ultrasounds, 3D ultrasounds were first developed in Austria in 1989. Once developed, this type of advanced technology quickly became a widespread option that was used as a diagnostic test. When comparing 2D and 3D ultrasounds, they generally provide the same type of information; the only difference is the fact that the 3D ultrasounds display what the 2D ultrasounds do, but to a greater degree. In order to come up with a 3D ultrasound image, the technology is designed to take a series of 2D ultrasound images simultaneously, at a rapid pace. Once a series of 2D images are taken, the 3D ultrasound image is then created.
There are many benefits of 3D ultrasounds in comparison to 2D ultrasounds. One of the most beneficial aspects of 3D ultrasound images is the fact that families are provided the opportunity to bond with their soon-to-be newborn child. Although the previous version of the ultrasound was an exciting experience, the new and improved 3D technology allows the family to view a more detailed, realistic representation of their baby. 3D ultrasound images have been shown to make a difference in parents when compared to that of 2D ultrasounds. For instance, mothers who view a 3D ultrasound are more likely to change their diets to a healthier diet than if they viewed a 2D ultrasound. Additionally, these mothers are also more apt to stop harmful behaviors such as smoking and drinking.
The latest ultrasound option of the 4D image is simply a version of the 3D ultrasound that moves. This type of ultrasound is usually used when the fetus moves too much in order for the technician to obtain a still image of high quality. Although the quality of a 4D ultrasound image is less than that of a 3D ultrasound image, it is better than that of a 2D ultrasound image.
The choice of which type of ultrasound technology to use is perhaps the least difficult decision to make during pregnancy. This is simply due to the fact that either type of ultrasound image will be able to convey the necessary information. If both the 2D and the 3D ultrasound procedures are performed within the same pregnancy, most insurance companies will cover the costs associated with them. Each version of the ultrasound images has its own set of benefits even though the majority of medical professionals prefer 3D over 2D. Even though they are serious tests to have for diagnostic purposes, these types of procedures are quite enjoyable bonding experiences for families.
